The Celtic Calendar was split into two halves: the dark and the light. Samhain at 1st November was the beginning of the dark half of the year and the Celtic New year. Beltane on the 1st of May was the start of the light half of the year. These halves were also split into quarters which marked the two portals falling on the 1st of February (Imbolc) and the 1st of August (Lughnasadh). The quarters were divided by the solstices and equinoxes known as the four Albans. The Four Fire Festivals marked the turning of the seasons.
