Your Love Story does not end when you take your wedding vows. In fact marriage can mark the start of a whole new and more exciting romantic chapter.
It can be easy to slip into a comfortable routine and there’s actually something rather tender about those who are described as being like an ‘old married couple.’ But no matter how long you’ve been married, this routine does not have to be dull. There will always be the practicalities of life to attend to but when these are speckled with romance, love’s flame will keep burning brightly.
There are many ways to keep the marriage bond strong and although these may not all sound very romantic, they will form the basis of a good relationship. These include:
Good honest communication ~ Talking helps you both keep in touch with each other’s needs and feelings. Bring up routine events in your conversation so you both know what’s going on in your work and social lives and with your children. There will always be a depth of understanding when you communicate honestly and openly with each other.
Trust ~ Trust is the basis of all close relationships. Trust needs to be earned and it can therefore take a while for trust between you to build. Through shared loving and supportive experiences you will learn to have faith in your relationship and trust one another.
Nonsexual Touch ~ A physically fulfilling relationship will add to the romance and contentment within a marriage. Even so, holding hands when walking or standing in a queue, a hug as you leave for work in the morning or just a fleeting stroke when passing each other by in a crowded room can be incredibly romantic and will help enhance the bonds of affection.
Respect and be polite to each other ~ No matter how long you’ve been together, never take each other’s company or support for granted. Respect that sometimes your views will differ. Be courteous and considerate towards one another. By the same token, respect the other’s privacy. This will mean both partner’s sense of self will be solid as will be their love for each other.
Be Loving ~ No matter what your age and how long you have been married, be open and affectionate. There are three little words you should aim to tell each other every day and you don’t have to work hard to guess what these are!
Follow through with promises ~ Neither of you should make promises you don’t intend to keep.
Following the above tips will keep the foundations of your relationship strong. Along with these, you might think of ways to add romance to your marriage. These can be little daily romantic gestures that come to form a cherished and even secret part of your union with the occasional grand romantic act thrown in to add spice to your marriage.
